If 100 people on an airplane crash and all but 70 die, how many survived?

Wait wait wait….

ALL BUT 70 DIE??????

Buddy, you gotta tell me what these 70 people who don’t die are doing because if they have truly found the key to immortality then I’m all ears.

Unless, of course you’re saying that in order to achieve immortality, you need to survive a plane crash on a plane containing exactly 100 people (including yourself) on it, and that you have a 70% chance of becoming immortal assuming you don’t die.

Those are some risky odds though, I think I’d rather just die whenever I die to be completely honest.

Video tutorials about plane crash all but 70 died riddle

It depends on the crash. Depending on the causes of the crash, the seconds and minutes leading up to the crash may vary greatly.

One of the leading types of aircraft accidents is CFIT or Controlled Flight Into Terrain. This means that an airworthy aircraft under the crew’s control collides unintentionally with ground, water or obstacles. CFIT crashes most often happen in bad weather and/or during night time, often over hilly or mountainous terrain.

CFIT accidents are most often caused by pilot error. For example, the crew turns the aircraft onto a wrong course and hits a mountain while in clouds, or starts descending too early and crashes into trees in fog. As a general rule in CFIT accidents, the time between the crew realizes that something’s gone awry, and the crash, is very short.

For example, in 1998, a Moscow-based Vnukovo Airlines flight was approaching Longyear airport in Svalbard, a mountainous Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. The crew inadvertently set the aircraft to fly on an incorrect heading. As a result, the aircraft, flying in thick cloud cover, smashed into a mountain, killing all 141 people on board.

The crew received the first indication of the impending doom on their instruments 16 seconds before the crash. A ground proximity warning sounded less than 10 seconds before the crash. And finally, the mountain became visible perhaps a second or two before impact. A large jet on approach travels more than a kilometer (or almost a mile) in 16 seconds, and maneuvers very slowly. Hence the pilots were out of options well before they even realized what was going to happen. The passengers most likely never knew what hit them.

Some might consider that a blessing, having no time for panic, fear or regrets.

In other cases, such as in-flight structural failures, multiple engine failures, and possibly the worst of the worst, in-flight fires, the time is often much longer between the realization that the end is near, and the end actually happening.

These seconds and minutes are likely harrowing beyond imagination and I do not wish to speculate what goes on in the cabin and in the minds of the passengers. As for the flight crew, many an investigation report describes brave pilots fighting until the end to save the aircraft, retaining at least a glimmer of hope in a hopeless situation.

*

I’d also like to point out that the aviation-industry is reasonably good at self-regulation. Every accident leads to an investigation, and every investigation leads to improvements that make future accidents less likely to happen. Since the 1970s, both the number of airliner crashes and the number of fatalities annually have been decreasing. In fact, in 2017, there were 399 fatalities. The last time that figure was so low, was in 1937 – well before flying became a mode of mass transportation

[1]

.

Hence, while the outcomes of a crash are grim, the chances of ending up in one are extremely slim.
